The 2nd Annual Fort Rodd Hill Historic Half Marathon
I would like to introduce you to the Fort Rodd Hill HISTORIC Half Marathon which is on Sunday, June 5th, 2011 in Colwood, B.C. (Just a few minutes out of Victoria) The Historic Half starts and finishes on the beach between the Fort Rodd Hill & Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites of Canada.
This start/finish venue is amazing!
Fort Rodd Hill is a coast artillery fort built in the late 1890's to defend Victoria and the Esquimalt Naval Base. The Fort includes three gun batteries, underground magazines, command posts, guardhouses, barracks and searchlight emplacements.
Fisgard Lighthouse is the first lighthouse on Canada's west coast and it is still in operation! Built by the British in 1860, when Vancouver Island was not yet part of Canada, Fisgard's red brick house and white tower have stood faithfully at the entrance to Esquimalt harbour. for more than a century and a half. Once a beacon for British Royal Navy's Pacific Squadron, today Fisgard still marks home base for the Canadian Navy. The route travels though the streets of Colwood, along the Galloping Goose Trail and makes it way along Ocean Blvd which is surrounded by Coburg Peninsula and the Esquimalt Lagoon Bird Sanctuary. Once you make your way back to the Fort you will be greeted with a finishing medal, music and after event snacks. The route will be a double loop and will offer a shorter distance labeled as 'Just over 1/2 a Half!"
